VANOC takes Vision colours for Games theming
Today’s Globe and Mail reports that the 2010 Winter Olympic Games will use Vision’s trademark blue and green colours for street banners, hats, clothes and much more. Personally, I have no problem with this provided VANOC has negotiated the appropriate royalty agreement with Vision for use of its intellectual property. Has such an agreement been inked? The 16,000 members of Canada’s largest civic party have a right to know. Without such an agreement, the use of the colours could be deemed a form of “ambush marketing,” an activity strictly prohibited by VANOC and the International Olympic Committee. It is not surprising VANOC would wish to associate itself with Vision’s brand, but any effort to do so should be open and transparent — and subject to membership review.
