Building permits heading down, down

The latest update on city building permit activity is grim.  W. M. Johnston,  director of licences and inspections, reports in his latest monthly summary that:

“the value of building permits issued in January 2009 was approximately 29 percent lower than the previous month and 54 percent lower than the value for January 2008. The most significant decline continues to relate to residential type construction . . . There were only 34 new dwelling units constructed in the city, whereas there were 126 new units constructed in the previous month.”

Last month’s report triggered another, deeper round of budget cuts for consideration by council in the 2009 budget.
