UBCM to debate proposal for province-wide cycling investments
My June proposal to seek a province-wide cycling strategy developed through co-operation between Victoria and UBCM is gathering media attention and support across the province. Vancouver city council unanimously approved the motion in June. Before the summer break, communities as diverse as Courtenay and Sicamous were signing on.
It’s a refreshing reminder, in the middle of the Hornby bike lane discussions, that cycling is not just a downtown, spandex-clad issue. The success of the Galloping Goose trail around VIctoria and the Kettle Valley Railway cycle loop, a major eco-tourism generator, are good examples of what could be done with minimal co-operation between Victoria and local governments.
