“Out of cash:” the city’s efforts to help the Playhouse Theatre survive
The frustration and disappointment over the closure of the Playhouse Theatre continues to reverberate far beyond the arts community.
Here, for the many concerned arts supporters who have contacted me, is City Manager Penny Ballem’s memo to council setting out the events that led to last week’s closure announcement.
The report to council which led to last year’s $1 million support package is here, along with an associated report sketching the wider, harsh financial reality for the city’s arts organizations. (Both are marked confidential, but were released last fall after some edits in the wake of news reports on these in camera deliberations.)
