Viaducts removal would not increase traffic in Strathcona

Strathcona residents, worried that the city’s proposal to remove the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts has not included a plan to calm traffic on Prior and Venables, have been keeping a steady drumfire of e-mails coming to City Hall in the past 14 days.

They fear that traffic could actually increase in their neighbourhood with the removal of the old freeway stump.

Last week, city engineers sent concerned residents a fact sheet clarifying the situation: there will be no increase and perhaps even a modest reduction in traffic, even without additional measures that could be considered.

City staff will be meeting with community leaders this week and I’ll be seeing residents a week later to receive their feedback.
