What if elevated viaducts were proposed today? Check out Oklahoma City
As Vancouver considers removal of its elevated Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts for replacement with an at-grade boulevard, Oklahoma City is heading in the opposite direction, proposing to create an elevated throughway.
But the 1998 plan, now proposed for completion, is running into a wave of opposition that sounds astonishingly like the criticisms levelled at our Viaducts: the Oklahoma viaducts would cut off neighbourhoods, blight an entire district and hurt new development.
If Vancouver’s experience is any guide, the Oklahoma critics — including the Mayor and council — are absolutely right.
