Three former mayors — Mike Harcourt, Phillip Owen, Larry Campbell — urge removal of Viaducts

Former Mayor Philip Owen is just the latest of Vancouver’s former civic leaders to endorse removal and replacement of the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts.

City councillors received Owen’s e-mail Monday afternoon, but it was preceded in May by a strong letter from former Mayor Mike Harcourt and even earlier this year by Senator Larry Campbell, who urged council to take action.

“For a whole lost of positive reasons, the  Vancouver Viaducts should be removed,” wrote Owen.

The issue goes to council tomorrow.

“I strongly support the demolition of the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts,” said Harcourt, “as well as plans to turn East False Creek into a vibrant community with ample open space, neighbourhood culture and social diversity.”

“I support removal of the Viaducts,” wrote Campbell. “It may be educational to keep at least a portion of them to remind us of what happens when you do not challenge conventional wisdom.”
