Reports of death of Le Marche St. George greatly exaggerated
Le Marche St. George, the popular neighbourhood grocery store and community fixture at St. George and E. 28th in East Vancouver, is not at risk of closure, says deputy city manager Sadhu Johnston.
A recent city inspection, triggered by a neighbourhood complaint, found the market was using upstairs residential space to promote seasonal specials.
“The property-use inspector informed the owners of Le Marché St. George that they cannot use the residential space as retail without proper approvals in place,” says Johnston in a note to council, “which may require a rezoning application if so desired.”
He concludes, “to be clear, the market can continue to operate as currently approved under city regulations.” City staff are also working with the owners to ensure sidewalk activities can continue and are encouraging the owners to bring forward an application in that regard.
